HOLY ****, JOHN CENA TURNED HEEL!

March 1st, 2025 in Toronto, Canada will forever be etched in North American pro wrestling history. On this date, at Elimination Chamber, John Cena finally turned heel. No, that wasn't a typo. John. Cena. Turned. Heel.
What does this mean?
Every so often there's a heel turn that breaks through the walls of the industry and goes mainstream. We are currently in a social media connected world where there's different mediums and streams of content. However, one aspect remains constant over generations, pro wrestling moments. Over the last 20 years there has been no bigger representative of the industry's biggest promotion than John Cena. He is the Hulk Hogan of his era. He's among the biggest megastars in wrestling history. He was the ultimate good guy. He was truly "the face that runs the place."
Like Hogan almost 30 years ago, many fans thought they'd never see the day that John Cena of all people would turn heel. Too many kids love him. Why try to fix what's not broken?
Does this turn cause a seismic shift in the industry landscape like Hogan's did? That's another discussion to be had. But it surely makes WrestleMania and the rest of John Cena's retirement tour hell of a lot more interesting.
Why it makes sense
Take the name value away and John Cena has been a JAG (just another guy) for the last half decade in WWE. He also became "the villain" by going hollywood, something that he publicly criticized The Rock about in what was the catalyst for their feud in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Cena has looked like a has-been who can't quite capture his old glory. In his final year as a wrestler, with the talent in the company he helped stay afloat for over a decade passing him by daily, what can Cena do to achieve his goal of breaking Ric Flair's world title record?
Join The Final Boss
Who's the one guy in WWE who's a bigger name than John Cena? Who has more social media followers? Who is deeply woven in the fabric of American pop culture for wrestling and his movies? Who's richer? Who has even more resources than Cena? To be blunt, who's the one guy who is flat out more famous than John Cena? The answer is easy, it's The Rock. The Final Boss is the perfect partner to make Cena's dreams come true.
What does mean for Cody Rhodes?
If it wasn't evident after arguably the greatest WrestleMania ending and crowning moment of all time just last year, Cody Rhodes is THE guy. The full time reigning champion has now found himself once again in a mainstream-level earth-shattering storyline heading into the biggest show of the year. Judging by what we've seen, there's no doubt that Cody Rhodes will execute at a high level.
Enjoy the ride
We'll fine out very soon how WWE executes this epic moment. There's no doubt, whether we like it or not, that we'll all be paying extra attention during this years road to WrestleMania. It looks like for the second year in a row, The Rock and Triple H have been able to create magic out of uncertainy and chaos. The biggest heel turn of the 21st century took place and it basically broke the internet. What a time to be a pro wrestling fan. Embrace it!
